A Hymn for Wrestling with Scripture
A Hymn for Wrestling with Scripture
BUNESSAN 5.5.5.4 D ("Morning Has Broken")
Don’t be discouraged when you read scripture.
You must remember: context and place.
Who were they writing? And who was listening?
These are important in any case.
Always remember when you read scripture
words have been added, biases used.
Spoken in context to certain people
now used to harm, spite, judge, and abuse.
Now we have science that explains queerness,
Something the writers couldn’t have known.
Mixed with tradition, scripture, and reason,
we comprehend, our insight has grown.
Remember Jesus’ greatest commandment:
Love your creator; your neighbors, too.
God is still speaking, moving and loving
all of their children, queer folk like you.
